The painting, which is ten and a half feet wide, depicts the first shot played, (by Jim Barnes) at the informal competition between a team of American professionals competing against a team of British professionals at Wentworth Club in 1926. Encouraged by this event, Sam Ryder founded the Ryder Cup which was played for the first time at the Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts in 1927.

Every effort has been used to produce superior museum quality giclée prints. A 12-colour fine art machine, the latest CANON image PROGRAF PRO 2600, together with acid free 100% cotton rag paper and Archival-Grade pigment inks.

THE PRINTER : CANON image PROGRAF PRO 2600

The PRO 2600 is probably the best wide-format professional printer able to produce museum quality glicée prints of the highest standard.

The built-in calibration maintains colour consistency throughout the print runs. The PRO-2600 delivers a very high-resolution 4800 x 1200 dpi providing precise detail and sharpness with exceptional detail and colour accuracy.

THE PAPER : HAHNEMUHLE Photo Rag Baryta

After sampling several of the very highest quality papers I chose Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Baryta paper as the ideal surface for the golf prints. Rag paper is used where maximum strength, durability, and permanence are essential.

It is a 315gsm, 100% cotton Fine Art paper with a beautiful high-gloss baryta-style finish. Natural white with no optical brighteners, it delivers rich colour, deep blacks and crisp detail with an elegant sheen that won’t distract with glare.

‍ THE INKS : Genuine CANON LUCIA PRO II pigment inks

The Archival-Grade Lucia Pro II inks provide superior colourfastness ensuring long-term print preservation, upwards of 150 years under glass. The pigment chemistry in the inks is in an altogether different class to the dye inks used in many prints, which have little permanency.

Designed for optimum results they deliver a wide colour gamut, smooth graduation and enhanced scratch resistance. The cutting-edge 12-colour LUCIA PRO II ink with Chroma Optimiser enhances dark density and produces deeper blacks and complex colour shadow with precision.

THE BOOK, ‘ORIGINS 1926’

Built on Alastair Loudon’s foundational writing, as published in The Gentry Links Trilogy (Grant Books Ltd, 2023) the accompanying book explores the lives and achievements of the individuals portrayed in the painting and places them within the wider story of how the ‘modern game’ emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Drawing upon original research and specially commissioned artwork, the book offers an historical context to the painting, marking the coming together of many of the leading players, administrators and visionaries whose influence helped shape the ‘modern game’ during the twentieth century.

This was a period in which the ‘modern game’ had matured beyond its nineteenth-century origins, born out of the ascendancy of the ‘gutty’ in the 1850s.
